Overview: In second grade, students complete their mastery of phonics, shift from building verbal to reading comprehension, begin to learn grammar and reading fluency, and start a pattern of vocabulary building.

The second grade materials start with eight units made up of 180 lessons that teach phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency and which build familiarity with test-taking skills. These are newly developed exercises of extremely high quality. They use the popular finger puppet animated characters and they are really really fun. These are advanced phonics exercises with more complex vowel sounds (silent e, ai, ay etc) and complex consonant combinations (digraphs such as ch, wh). These units include vocabulary building sections teaching antonyms, synonyms, and homonyms.

The second half of the second grade materials are built around thematic units covering spiders, bees, worms, nutrition, hygiene, fitness, The Rainforest, the Arctic, deserts, directions, maps and globes, symbols and keys, heat, sound, light, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, conflict resolution, following the law, goods and services, and consumers and producers.
These sections provide a choice of methods to read each story along with vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises. They are built around the Lolly and Geo (the Robot) characters and include extensive teaching guides with ideas for follow-up enrichment activities and further reading..
