Most competitive colleges recommend at least two to three years of high school social studies, which generally includes history as well as courses in government or civics. Teaching U.S. History 1 in High School

While students receive a foundational understanding of U.S. history during elementary and middle school, high school level coursework involves a deeper analysis of historical events, systems of government and important figures. Time4Learning’s course presents a cohesive and comprehensive overview of the history of the United States, surveying the major events and turning points of U.S. history as it moves from the age of exploration through modern times.

In addition to core knowledge, this course focuses on building literacy skills by encouraging students to read and write in a variety of formats. They will also use primary and secondary sources to build critical thinking skills and use their conclusions to compose argumentative essays that outline their findings.

Teaching Survey of World History in High School

Another of the social studies subjects in high school that colleges look for on a transcript is World History. This year-long course examines the major events and turning points of world history from ancient times to the present. Students investigate the development of classical civilizations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Asia, and then explore the economic, political, and social revolutions that have transformed human history.

Often taken in the sophomore year, Time4Learning’s online Survey of World History course encourages students to think historically by making connections and comparisons between events and people across periods of time and geography. Teaching U.S. History 2 in High School

Although not necessarily a requirement for college admission, students who opt for additional social studies credits may want to take a second year of U.S. History instruction during high school.  U.S. History II is a year-long course that examines the major events and turning points of U.S. history from the Industrial Revolution through the modern age.

The course is organized both chronologically and thematically to help students better understand the context of important historical events. Each lesson begins with a thought-provoking warm-up activity to engage students and activate or build on prior knowledge. With an increased use of multimedia, the course asks students to analyze historical

artwork, political cartoons, photography, and video in the context of lesson themes. Students listen to audio clips and watch speeches by U.S. presidents and other important historical figures to build their listening and comprehension skills.

Teaching U.S. Government in High School

Many colleges expect high school students to have completed a one-semester course in U.S. Government. The goal of any U.S. Government course is to give students a practical understanding of the principles and procedures of government. The topics covered in a high school U.S. government course are designed to prepare students to be competent citizens who understand and are capable of participating in the political processes of the nation.

Each of Time4Learning’s high school social studies classes uses assignments and project-based lessons to encourage students to apply critical thinking skills to scenarios,
