Science -1st Grade Lesson Plans

Time4Learning is an online student-paced learning system covering preschool through middle school. It is popular as a first grade homeschool curriculum, for afterschool enrichment, for remediation, and for summer study.

The lesson plans below provide a detailed list of the first grade science curriculum, which is enhanced with material from Science4Us, a comprehensive, digital science program. Additional resources related to first grade science are also provided below.

Students enrolled in first grade science will also have access to second grade science lessons as part of their membership/ This allows them to move ahead at their own pace.

If you are just learning about Time4Learning, we'd suggest first looking at our interactive lesson demos. Members often use this page as a resource for more detailed planning, to choose specific activities using the activity finder, or to compare our curriculum with state standards.

Total Activities: 8
Book Chapter
Inquiry Science Skills Science Tools: The tools module reviews with students the tools scientists use for both qualitative and quantitative observations. Students review how to use tools such as their 5 senses, rulers, and balance scales through hands-on activities.
Physical Science Matter States of Matter: Kindergarten through Grade 2 students have experience with matter in its three states: solid, liquid and gas. When learning about the states of matter, students further explore the concept that anything on earth that has mass and takes up space is matter. Students are introduced to solids, liquids and gases, the three most common states of matter on earth, and the unique properties used to characterize each phase.
Materials and Mixture: Science4Us begins the study of matter with everyday objects that students are comfortable with. Students explore everyday objects they know like recyclables and identify objects made of wood, cloth, plastic and metal.
Energy Light Energy: Students learn that light energy is the energy that allows them to see the matter around them. Through interactive lesson and activities, students explore the differences between natural and man-made light.
Sound Energy: Students experiment with energy that can be heard when matter is present to carry the vibration. Students learn about pitch, volume, and vibration as they explore and watch different methods of making sound.
Force & Motion Magnets: Though every kindergarten student may know that magnets can be used to hold school artwork on the fridge, they may not know the many other uses for magnets there are. Students will learn about tiny and huge magnets that are used every day. Students will also learn to predict which objects a magnet will attract and test those predictions through interactive activities. The Silly Bulls game allows students to practice with the vocabulary they are learning so that they can use scientific terms to describe their explorations with magnets.
Life Science Living Things Plants: Students with become familiar with the ways in which plants meet the four characteristics of living things. Students learn the parts and functions of plants and even invent their own plant in an illustrated online activity. They learn how plants meet their needs for food, water, air, and a place to live.
Earth/Space Science Earth Weather: Students explore Earth’s ordinary and extreme weather in safety. Activities include using the weather information to decide what an online character should wear and learning about how to stay safe during extreme weather.

Activity finder tool for parents

Lesson Activity Finder Tool

The lesson activity finder is one of the many helpful tools that Time4Learning offers its members. The activity finder is a shortcut that makes it easy for parents to preview lessons or find extra practice for their child.

Every lesson in the curriculum has a unique activity number, referred to in the lesson plans as an "LA Number." These numbers can be found on the table above or the lesson plans in the parent administration area.

The activity finder can be found in the lower left hand corner of the Student LaunchPad page. To use it, members simply log in to their child’s account, type the Learning Activity (LA) number of a lesson into the Activity Finder and click “Go” to open it.

For additional information, please visit our hints and help section, which gives more details about the activity finder.
