Kindergarden math students learn about two-dimensional shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. They will be expected to describe similarities and differences among these shapes. They will also be introduced to three-dimensional shapes like spheres, cones, cylanders, and cubes. They will learn about spatial relationships like over and under; above and below; in and out; and top, bottom, or middle. Kindergarden math students will be expected to match objects with outlines of their shapes. They will learn to identify their right hand from their left.

Children learning kindergarden math will find patterns in sound, physical movement, and concrete objects. They will learn to sort and classify objects by color, shape, size or kind. Kindergarden math students will learn that a symbol can be used to represent missing or unknown quantities. They will learn methods to solve real world problems and will use one-to-one matching to determine if two groups are equal.
