Kansas Homeschooling Requirements
Compulsory school attendance applies to children between the ages of 7 and 18. Parents need to comply with the following requirements when homeschooling in Kansas:
- Register your homeschool as a non-accredited private school.
- If applicable, notify your child’s current school that he/she is changing schools.
- Select competent instructors.
- Teach for the required period of time.
Kansas Homeschool Registration
Kansas homeschool laws require parents to register their homeschool as a non-accredited private school. This process involves filling out and mailing a form that includes the name and address of the private school (homeschool), as well as the custodian of the records to the state’s board of education. There is no fee to register nor do families have to re-register every year.

Homeschool Recordkeeping in Kansas
Although Kansas homeschool laws don’t have specific requirements for recordkeeping, it is recommended that families homeschooling in Kansas keep detailed homeschool portfolios. These can include grades, attendance, samples of the student’s work, etc. If your child is planning on enrolling in public school or another accredited school at some point or receiving a post secondary education, having a portfolio or high school transcript will be useful, and in some cases, necessary.

The Sunflower State has recommended graduation requirements for students in non-accredited private schools. They are as follows:
- 4 units of English Language Arts
- 3 units of History and Government
- 3 units of Science
- 3 units of Mathematics
- 1 unit of Physical Education
- 1 unit of Fine Arts
- 6 units of Electives
Enrolling in Public School after Homeschooling
Since homeschools in Kansas must be registered as non-accredited private schools, families who are considering enrolling in a public school or other accredited school after homeschooling must ensure they keep detailed records.
Families must be aware that accredited schools are not required to accept credits from non-accredited private schools, in this case, homeschools. It is up to the schools to test students in order to determine the best placement and make a decision as to which credits will be accepted.
