Which state tests are available in Delaware?
The Delaware student testing program measures learning each spring and throughout the year. There are multiple types of assessments currently in place to measure student learning.
Below are the standardized tests currently offered in the state of Delaware:
- DeSSA ELA and Math – This assessment consists of three components: summative assessments, interim assessments and formative assessment practices. For grades 3-8, this series of tests help determine students strengths and areas for growth on the state’s standards for math and ELA literacy.
- DeSSA Social Studies – Delaware public school students in grades 4, 7, and 11 are asked questions on civics, economics, geography and history. The tests are based on the state’s standards for social studies and are intended to create competent citizens with a basic understanding of democratic principles and structure.
- Delaware Next Generation Science Assessment – Delaware created the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2013. Delaware public school students in grades 5, 8, and all high school biology students are given this assessment to measure each student’s understanding of basic scientific knowledge. Students must apply their knowledge of science to solve unique, real-life problems.
- Delaware Alternate Assessments – Students with significant cognitive disabilities are given alternate assessments in the following: English language arts/literacy, math, science, social studies. This assessment sets the expectations about what students with cognitive disabilities should know and be able to do.
In Delaware, students are not able to opt out of standardized testing. However, accommodations are available to assist children with test success, depending on their individual IEP.
Do Delaware homeschoolers have to take standardized tests?
If you want to have your child tested, you have several private options. According to the states Department of Education, nonpublic school students are eligible to take the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams. Many families use Time4Learning as an afterschool program as well to help prepare students for standardized tests.
