Singapore Math and Time4Learning
Considering Singapore Math? Or are you already using it? As parents quickly learn, one of the more difficult tasks they face is selecting homeschool materials that are right for each child. The web is full of homeschool curriculum lists, discussions about homeschool material, and homeschool resource reviews. Sifting through the various homeschool options to find the best curriculum for each child can be confusing.

Singapore Math is a fairly new entry in the homeschool math curriculum arena. The “Primary Maths” series, which originated in Singapore, features colorful workbooks and textbooks that rely more on pictures than on words to teach. The result is that children “discover” rather than are taught math concepts and, in the process, learn to think mathematically.
Singapore Math has been adopted by both homeschoolers and several public school districts across the US and Canada. In general, the books are a grade level ahead of a traditional US-based publisher’s textbook. Initially available only in the Singapore version (with metrics and the Singapore dollar), parents now have the option of buying US editions, which use English measurements. Singapore Math moves fairly quickly through the material presented. While children practice new skills as they are taught, there is less drill and review of previously taught concepts than in other math curricula. Many children benefit from supplementing Singapore Math with a math curriculum of contrasting style, especially one that integrates fun with learning.
Finding the Best Homeschool Math Curriculum
Many families discover that their children’s educational needs are best met by blending multiple curricula, culling the best from each. This eclectic approach increases effectiveness and optimizes learning. Time4Learning’s experience confirms that there is no single, best homeschool material. Parents are encouraged to select a diverse blend of materials and activities rather than feeling forced to choose a single ‘best’ resource.
In seventh grade math, students learn the measures of central tendency, data representation and statistics.
In this lesson, seventh graders learn how to calculate mean, median and mode using a frequency table.
Time4Learning Works With Singapore Math
While each child has a unique learning style, nearly all children respond well to online learning. Further, many children benefit from additional practice, particularly in subjects like math, where a lack of mastery in one concept can ripple through future concepts indefinitely. Time4Learning’s engaging, interactive style and self-paced presentation complements Singapore Math’s program and vice versa.
Many families tell us that using Time4Learning in conjunction with Singapore Math enhances their children’s academic success. Time4Learning’s interactive, self-paced instruction in math, language arts, social studies, science, and foreign language can be used as either a core or supplemental curriculum.
More Benefits of Time4Learning with Singapore Math
The Time4Learning language arts and math programs can stand alone or be worked into a Singapore Math education. The social studies and science lessons are easily used as a springboard for non-computer-related activities. The Reports function of our program keeps track of all lessons started and completed, percentage scores for quizzes and tests, the amount of time spent on each activity, and the dates the activities are completed. This makes portfolio keeping easy.
Time4Learning appeals to a wide range of learning styles. Our online learning materials are especially well-suited to children who are visual or kinesthetic learners. These children can take advantage of Time4Learning’s interactive, multi-media materials, and by shifting from computer-based lessons to discussion, or from paper and pencil exercises to art projects, all children stay engaged and benefit from different teaching methods. Variety keeps children motivated and attentive throughout the day.
Children like using the computer to learn. Time4Learning is a convenient, interactive homeschool resource that provides a welcome change from textbook-based lessons, and it helps children learn computer skills that are so important today.
