An elementary math curriculum should teach much more than the “how to” of simple arithmetic. Elementary math programs should be deep and broad and standards-based. They should not only teach students the skills they need, but should also make sure they understand how they arrived at the correct solution.

When searching for online math programs for elementary students, it’s also important to seek out curricula that teach concepts in a proper sequence. An effectual elementary school math curriculum allows children to progressively build understanding, skills, and confidence at their own pace. Quality teaching and curriculum follows a quality sequence.

On this page we provide an overview of Time4Learning’s math curriculum for elementary students by grade level, and why many families choose us as their ideal solution every year.

1st Grade Math Curriculum

This year, your student will begin to grasp how mathematics is everywhere around them. In first grade, students work with whole numbers and place value as they learn to add and subtract up through 20. They will develop number sense as they count and compare quantities, describe situations mathematically, and describe objects.

When choosing a math curriculum for first grade, look for a program that encourages your child’s natural curiosity about numbers in their world. It should also help students create a “math mindset”–a belief that they can do math. With  interactive, multimedia-based lessons that feature colorful animations, funny characters, and catchy songs, Time4Learning’s 1st grade math curriculum gets students excited about learning.

Some of the goals your first grade math student will aim for include:

  • Be able to count, identify and write numbers
  • Perform one-digit addition and subtraction
  • Have an understanding of quantity (more and less)
  • Familiarity with patterns and shapes
  • Knowledge of place value (ones, tens, etc.)

2nd Grade Math Curriculum

Your second grader is advancing in their use of numbers and quantitative methods.  This year your child learns more about place value and explores basic fractions. Second graders are introduced to “skip counting” as a way to prepare for learning multiplication. They will also learn about money, measurement, and how measures relate to one another.

Time4Learning aims to keep kids motivated to learn new math concepts using a variety of entertaining approaches to instruction. Time4Learning uses interactive math games as a key element to reinforce each of the skills second graders are learning, such as:

  • Reading and writing numerals to 100 and counting objects to 100 or more
  • Addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers without regrouping, up to 100, using models and algorithms
  • Exploring number patterns on a hundred chart and with a calculator
  • Combining shapes to form others shapes and find geometric shapes in real-life situations
  • Learning and comparing money values including the quarter (25 cents), half-dollar (50 cents), and dollar (100 cents)

3rd Grade Math Curriculum

In third grade, not only are students acquiring more advanced skills in mental math, but they will also learn how to explain the steps they used to solve a problem. Third graders work to master the multiplication tables and commit them to memory. They are also introduced to the basics of geometry and will solve math problems involving objects’ area, perimeter, and volume.

An effective third grade math curriculum should ensure mastery of each of these concepts/skills by providing thorough instruction and plenty of opportunities for practice. Time4Learning incorporates exploratory, hands-on activities in simulations so kids realize how math works in their everyday lives. Printable worksheets provide extra practice away from the computer and help reinforce concepts learned online.

Some of the math goals your student will reach for in third grade include:

  • Adding four-digit numbers
  • Subtracting with regrouping
  • Rounding numbers to the nearest tens and hundreds
  • Understanding two- and three-dimensional shapes
  • Solving word problems that involve time, money, and measurement

4th Grade Math Curriculum

In grade four, your child should now have a strong handle on whole numbers and place value. Mental math becomes more important this year, so having the major multiplication facts committed to memory can boost math success.  Fourth graders will be building their abilities to

approach math problems from a variety of angles and using a variety of mathematical methods to solve problems.

When choosing a 4th grade curriculum for math, select one that not only teaches students how to solve mathematical problems, but how to apply math to solve problems in everyday life.  Seek out a program with a flexible, self-paced format that helps students take their time to thoroughly understand math concepts.

Students in fourth grade will be learning about:

  • Addition and subtraction with regrouping
  • Understanding place value
  • Solving problems with decimal points
  • Memorizing math facts with the help of fact families
  • Creating a number sentence or equation from a word problem
  • Finding perimeter and area of a shape by counting units
  • Familiarity with both the traditional and metric systems

5th Grade Math Curriculum

As they prepare for middle school, mastery of mathematical concepts and practices becomes even more vital for fifth graders. Grade five allows students to review all the foundational skills they’ve learned thus far in areas of numeration, addition and subtraction up to 6 digits, multiplication to 3 digits, division up to 3 digit divisors, decimals to the 10 thousandths place, measurement, fractions, geometry, percents, probability, statistics and integers.

Visual instruction can boost your fifth grader’s ability to make connections between known concepts and new ones. Motivating, media-rich content keeps students engaged, and powerful interactive instructional tools help them build content knowledge and essential skills. Time4Learning offers a comprehensive fifth grade math curriculum that helps prepare them for middle school and beyond.

Some of the math objectives your fifth grader will reach for include:

  • Rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand and hundred thousand
  • Using partial products and mental multiplication
  • Dividing with two-digit divisors
  • Ordering and comparing fractions
  • Comparing perimeter and area
