Online Writing Curriculum for High School Students

Time4Learning’s high school curriculum includes English courses that encompass critical reading and writing skills. Based on Time4Learning homeschool member feedback, we know that one of the most challenging aspects of writing for families is parent/student feedback. Nothing is more discouraging to a homeschooled teen than having their writing picked apart, even by a well-meaning parent. Time4Writing’s certified teachers remove that potential conflict and help parents and students get back to focusing on what’s important – – improving writing skills.

Time4Writing offers parents and students a personalized writing instruction program designed to help high schoolers prepare for the SATs, post-secondary education, and the workforce. Each eight-week high school writing course from Time4Writing gives students access to one-on-one feedback from a certified writing teacher.

Homeschoolers may decide to use Time4Writing as their core writing curriculum or may prefer to use it as a supplement to other programs.

At the high school level, Time4Writing offers targeted instruction in areas such as grammar and mechanics, paragraph writing, essay writing, and research. Basic Level High School Writing Courses

Understanding grammar and usage is the core of any foundational writing program. This is a foundational course that prepares students for the important skills of paragraph and essay writing. By the end of this course students will have reinforced the grammar rules they learned at the middle school level and will have covered any other guidelines that are necessary to writing clearly and accurately at the high school level.

In this unit, students will master the identification of nouns and verbs as well as writing a complete sentence without fragments or run-ons.
In this unit, students learn about using phrases and clauses to create complex sentences.
In this unit, students study the plural and possessive forms of nouns, how to make their subjects and verbs agree in number, and how to correctly identify and use verb tenses.
In this unit, students study the use of three important sentence elements: pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs.
In this unit, students cover words that often give English writers difficulty as well as proper use of capitalization.
In this unit, students learn how to properly place commas in clauses, lists, and other parts of sentences that need to be set off.
In this unit, students find out how to correctly use some of the lesser known punctuation marks when writing sentences.
In this unit, students will practice proofreading their writing for grammar, usage, and mechanics errors.

Paragraphs are what give most every kind of writing its structure. In this course, students prepare for essay and report writing by mastering the fundamentals of paragraph writing. They will cover topic sentences, closing sentences, and how to use details to enhance their writing. They will also explore different types of paragraphs such as narrative, descriptive, and expository.

In this unit, students will study the components of a paragraph and will practice writing topic sentences.
In this unit, students continue learning about topic sentences and how to create sentences that support them.
In this unit, students investigate concluding sentences and how they are used to bring closure to a paragraph.
In this unit, students begin to understand how to tell a story with a paragraph.
In this unit, students are introduced to using descriptive language in paragraph writing to help the reader see and feel what the writer is sharing.
In this unit, students learn how to convey information by writing an expository paragraph.
In this unit, students find out how to use persuasive language and strategies within a paragraph to convince the reader of their point of view.
In this unit, students will pick a paragraph type they’d like to write and will share it with their classmates upon completion.

Intermediate Level High School Writing Courses

Once students have studied proper grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph writing, they are ready to combine those skills into writing a formal essay. Students will use the writing process (prewriting, drafting, writing, editing, revising) to convey information clearly. Mastery of this formal style of writing is essential for success in college English courses.

In this unit, students will learn three different prewriting techniques and how to apply them to their own writing.
In this unit, students investigate how to use a thesis statement to tell their audience the purpose of their paper and to guide their writing.
In this unit, students study about introductory paragraphs and how to use them to capture the interest of the reader.
In this unit, students examine how topic sentences, supporting details, and transitional phrases work together to support a thesis statement.
In this unit, students begin to understand how to tie up their essays with a strong concluding paragraph which restates the thesis.
In this unit, students are introduced to editing symbols and how to use revision techniques on their essays.
In this unit, students utilize logic and reason to write an essay that will persuade the reader to their point of view.
In this unit, students will take two ideas and write an essay comparing how they are alike and contrasting how they differ.

Advanced Level High School Writing Courses

High school level writers who have met the challenge of Time4Writing’s “High School Essay Writing” course may be ready to push their writing skills to the next stage. This course focuses on finding expert sources on a given subject and writing either an informative or persuasive essay that is backed up with solid information. By the end of the course, students will be able to plan, develop, draft, and revise a research paper that utilizes MLA style, including parenthetical citations.

In this unit, students will explore the importance of research, choose the topic for their paper, and determine what keywords they’ll need to focus on.
In this unit, students will delve into their research, refine their topic, and write a statement of purpose for their paper.
In this unit, students learn how to brainstorm questions that they want their paper to answer, group those questions together under specific headings, then create an outline for the structure of the paper.
In this unit, students use their research and the outline they created to make final preparations for starting to write their paper.
In this unit, students examine their original thesis statement to see if it needs reworking and then plunge into their first draft using their notes and outline.
In this unit, students will go back and write the introduction and conclusion for their paper as well as the parenthetical citations that need to be included in the body.
In this unit, students will take the time to cite all the sources they used in the writing of their paper, including completing a page for works cited.
In this unit, students will evaluate, proofread, and revise what they’ve written to create a final draft of their research paper.
