Vocabulary Development - Language Arts Lesson Plans, Guided Reading, Building Reading Skill
A second grade reading program helps children learn the basic features of reading skill. Second grade children learn to translate letter patterns into spoken language using phonics, syllabication, and word parts. They apply this knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent reading skills. Reading skills develops as students continue to learn basic features of reading. The second grade students apply this knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent guided reading skills.

For example, the second grade reading program requires students to recognize and use spelling patterns such as vowel patterns and two-letter diphthongs. Language arts lesson plans help students apply knowledge of basic syllabication rules.

Children learn to decode two-syllable nonsense words and regular multisyllable words. Their reading level also includes use of common abbreviations, plus regular and irregular plurals. They are expected to demonstrate fluent reading skill using appropriate intonation and expression.

Students begin to understand common antonyms and synonyms. The second grade reading program includes language arts lesson plans that teach about analyzing individual words in unknown compound words to predict their meaning. Children learn the meanings of simple prefixes and suffixes and are expected to identify simple multiple-meaning words.

Reading Comprehension - Language Arts Lesson Plans, Guided Reading, Building Reading Skill
In a second grade reading program, reading level comprehension is tested with reading skill comprehension strategies such as responding to essential questions, making predictions, and comparing information from several sources. For example, guided reading includes comprehension of the purpose in reading, so students develop reading skills by telling about the information being sought. They will be asked to analyze the text by considering the author's purpose in writing it.

Also students in the second grade reading program are prompted to ask questions and to restate facts and details about the text. Through guided reading, they learn to recognize cause-and-effect relationships, to follow two-step written instructions appropriate to their reading level, and to interpret information from diagrams, charts, and graphs. Language arts lesson plans also teach children to use titles, tables of contents, and chapter headings to locate information in expository text.

Literary Response - Language Arts Lesson Plans, Guided Reading, Building Reading Skill
Another vital component of the second grade reading program is literary response and analysis. Through guided reading, they are introduced to a wide variety of significant works of reading level appropriate literature. Students develop reading skills by distinguishing between structural features of the text and literary elements such as theme, plot, setting, and characters.

Language arts lesson plans include asking students to compare and contrast plots, settings, and characters presented by different authors. They are asked to generate alternative endings to plots and to analyze the impact of these alternatives. Via guided reading, students study different versions of the same story, each reflecting a different culture. Their second grade reading program also uses language arts lesson plans that help them identify the use of rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration in reading level appropriate poetry.
