An 8th grade math curriculum should be taught using 8th grade lessons including interactive activities, learning games, printable worksheets, assessments, and reinforcement. Manipulatives are very important for 8th grade math lessons. 8th grade math curriculum should rely on many learning tools - 8th grade lessons with activities, worksheets, reinforcement exercises, and assessments. And a 8th grade math curriculum should cover all the math strands, not just arithmetic. The major math strands for 8th grade curriculum are number sense and operations, algebra, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, and data analysis and probability. While these math strands might surprise you, they are all critical lessons for an 8th grade math curriculum.

8th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Number Sense and Operations

8th grade math curriculum will teach students word names and standard numerals for integers, fractions, decimals, numbers expressed as percents, numbers with exponents, numbers expressed in scientific notation, absolute value, radicals, and ratios. Students will compare and order fractions, decimals, integers, and radicals using graphic models, number lines, symbols, numbers expressed in absolute value, scientific notation, integers, percents, numbers with exponents, fractions, decimals, radicals, and ratios. 8th grade math lessons include examples of rational and irrational numbers in real-world situations and describe the meanings of rational and irrational numbers using physical or graphical displays. Students will be expected to know relationships among fractions, decimals, and percents given a real-world context.

During 8th grade math, students simplify expressions using integers, exponents, and radicals. They learn equivalent forms of large and small numbers in scientific and standard notation and learn to identify and explain the absolute values of numbers. They learn how to express rational numbers in exponential notation and use negative exponents. Using scientific or standard notation, students express numbers including decimals between 0 and 1. 8th grade math students evaluate numerical and algebraic expression containing exponential notation and express base ten numbers as equivalent numbers in different bases, such as base two, base five, and base eight. The binary (base two) number system is an important part of the 8th grade math curriculum. Students learn how the base two system is used by computer technology. 8th grade math lessons teach how non-base ten numbers can be expressed as equivalent numbers in base ten.

8th grade math students will be expected to know the effects of the four basic math operations on whole numbers, fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and integers. They should understand the inverse relationship of positive and negative numbers and apply properties of real numbers to solve problems, including commutative, associative, distributive, identity, equality, inverse, and closure properties. 8th grade math lessons will present students with real-world problems in which they must choose appropriate operations using integers, ratios, rates, proportions, numbers expressed as percents, decimals, and fractions in two- or three-step problems. They will learn to solve problems with percents greater than 100%.

Using the order of operations, 8th grade math students will write and simplify expressions from real-world situations, solving multi-step problems. Using fractions, decimals, and integers, and appropriate methods of computation, students will know appropriate estimation techniques for given situations using real numbers. They will estimate to predict results and to check reasonableness of results, and will know if numbers are relatively prime. They will apply number theory concepts to determine terms in a real number sequence, and will use divisibility rules when solving real-world or mathematical problems.


8th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Measurement

8th grade math lessons use concrete and graphic models to explore and derive formulas for surface area and volume of three-dimensional regular shapes, including pyramids, prisms, and cones. Students will solve and explain real-world problems involving surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes. They will apply formulas for finding rates, distance, time, and angle measures and describe and use rates of change and other derived measures. The students will be expected to learn how a change in a figure's dimensions affects its perimeter, area, circumference, surface area, or volume. They will learn how changes in the volume, surface area, area, or perimeter of a figure affect the dimensions of the figure.

Scales, including those based on number lines, graphs, models, and maps, will be interpreted and applied during the course of 8th grade math lessons. Students will construct and use scale drawings to recreate situations. They will find measures of length, weight or mass, and capacity or volume using proportional relationships and properties of similar geometric figures. They will also solve problems using mixed units within each system, such as feet and inches, hours and minutes.

Using the conversion of measurements, 8th grade math students will solve problems within either the customary or the metric system. They will be expected to know a variety of strategies to estimate, describe, make comparisons, and solve real-world and mathematical problems involving measurements. They will select appropriate units of measure in each situation, will understand the precision of different measuring instruments, and will determine the appropriate precision unit for a given situation, identifying the number of significant digits as it relates to the least precise unit of measure. Students will be able to determine the greatest possible error of a given measurement and the possible actual measurements of an object. They will apply significant digits in the real-world context and will select and use appropriate instruments, technology, and techniques to measure quantities and dimensions to a specified degree of accuracy.
