5th Grade Math Curriculum - Standards, Lessons, Activities, Printable Worksheets

A fifth grade math curriculum should be taught using fifth grade lessons including interactive activities, learning games, printable worksheets, assessments, and reinforcement. fifth grade math curriculum should rely on many learning tools - fifth grade lessons with activities, worksheets, reinforcement exercises, and assessments. And a fifth grade math curriculum should cover all the math strands, not just arithmetic. The major math strands for fifth grade curriculum are number sense and operations, algebra, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, and data analysis and probability. While these math strands might surprise you, they are all critical lessons for a fifth grade math curriculum.

5th grade math lessons, worksheets, and activities teach fifth grade math curriculum covering all the math strands.

5th Grade Math - What are the Standards and Curriculum?

Time4Learning teaches a comprehensive 5th grade math curriculum using fun, fifth grade math activities to build a solid math foundation. Help your child excel in math, learn more about Time4Learning's fifth grade math lessons, curriculum, activities and worksheets.

5th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Geometry and Spatial Sense

Using appropriate geometric vocabulary, 5th grade math students learn to describe properties and attributes of two- and three-dimensional figures. They learn about obtuse and acute angles, radius, equilateral, scalene, isosceles triangles and other figures and objects. 5th grade math students will be expected to be able to draw and classify two-dimensional figures having ten or more sides. They learn the characteristics of and relationships among points, lines, line segments, rays, and planes.

Using manipulatives, 5th grade math students solve problems requiring spatial visualization. They learn more about symmetry, congruency, and reflections in geometric figures including how to justify that two figures are similar or congruent. The children learn about the effect of a flip, slide or turn on a geometric figure. They explore tessellations and compare the concepts of area, perimeter, and volume. The students learn to apply the concepts of area, perimeter, and volume to solve real-world and mathematical problems using student-developed formulas. They learn how area and perimeter are affected when geometric figures are combined, rearranged, enlarged, or reduced. The students identify, locate, and plot ordered pairs of whole numbers on a graph or on the first quadrant of a coordinate system.

5th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Algebraic Thinking

During their 5th grade math studies, children will describe, extend, create, predict, and generalize numerical and geometric patterns using a variety of models. They pose and solve problems by identifying a predictable visual or numerical pattern, explain and express numerical relationships and pattern generalizations, use algebraic symbols, and learn more about mathematical relationships in patterns.

5th grade math students analyze and generalize number patterns. They learn to state the rule for relationships and apply the appropriate rule to complete a table or a chart. They solve problems involving simple equations or inequalities using concrete or pictorial models, symbolic expressions, or written phrases. Using variables to represent a given verbal expression they translate equations into verbal and written problem situations.

5th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Data Analysis and Probability

Part of 5th grade math is learning about the types of graphs that are appropriate for different kinds of data, such as bars, lines, and circle graphs. During the 5th grade year children interpret and compare information from different types of graphs, including graphs from content-area materials and periodicals. They generate questions, collect responses, and use graphs to display data. They create an appropriate graph to display their data, including titles, labels, scales, and intervals.

5th grade math students learn to complete and interpret circle graphs using common fractions and percentages. They analyze and explain the implications of graphed data. They use a stem-and-leaf plot to identify range, median, mode, and mean. They use range and measures of central tendency in real-world situations. They use calculators to determine the range and mean of a data set. Using computer software including a spreadsheet, they will record, display, examine and evaluate data in order to construct labeled graphs.

During 5th grade, math students determine the number of possible combinations of given items and display them in an organized way. They will represent all possible outcomes for a simple probability situation or event using organized lists, charts, or tree diagrams. They calculate the probability of a particular event occurring from a set of all possible outcomes.

Using materials such as spinners, marbles or dice 5th grade math students identify and record possible outcomes of probability experiments to test predictions. During 5th grade math students design a survey to collect data and discuss ways to choose a sample representative of a large group. They apply statistical data to predict trends and to make and justify generalizations.

5th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Summary

5th grade math lessons and activities that cover just one or two of these five strands are narrow and lead to a weak understanding of math.

Time4Learning teaches a comprehensive math program. Children are placed in the sequence based on their current skills. Math becomes fun. Parents can participate and watch how new concepts are introduced progressively and mastered through practice. Let your child start learning today. Want to know more?
